Backpacking gear rental guide: what to borrow and what to bring

Planning a first overnight trip, returning to backpacking, or organizing a group? Start with the trip you want to take. Then decide which gear you already own, which items you need to borrow, and which personal essentials you will bring yourself. This guide helps you plan a complete kit without buying everything at once.

Rent a kit or build around what you own?

A complete kit can make sense when you are trying backpacking, travel occasionally, or want one coordinated setup. Buying may make more sense for gear you use often, personal items you prefer to own, and equipment you already know fits you.

There is no universal break-even point: compare the eventual rental price, shipping terms, purchase cost, storage space, and how often you expect to use each item. Borrowed Trail has not confirmed launch prices, so a precise cost comparison is not yet available.

Plan your core backpacking setup

  • Backpack: Consider fit, the size of your complete load, and how the pack feels when loaded.
  • Shelter: Match sleeping space to your group and check destination conditions and camping rules.
  • Sleep system: Plan a sleeping bag and pad appropriate for overnight conditions.
  • Cooking and water: Plan meal preparation, water carrying and treatment.
  • Lighting: Include a headlamp and a battery or power plan.
  • These are planning categories, not a guarantee that every item or consumable is included.

Your personal checklist and launch updates

Use three lists: Already own; Need to borrow; Need to bring personally. Include clothing, footwear, food, water, navigation, first-aid supplies, medications, sun protection and hygiene supplies. Confirm fuel, food storage, permits and specialized equipment against official route guidance.

Tell your outfitter your destination, season, trip dates, group size, fit information, gear already owned and experience level. Decide which shelter and cooking items your group can share.

Borrowed Trail plans for delivery before your trip and seven full days with the gear in your possession. Shipping transit time is excluded. Returns are planned through UPS using the provided return label. Confirm final terms when launch information becomes available, and practice setting up unfamiliar gear before leaving home.
